Originally published in Sugar Magazine 2018 Issue 10 as a creative writing piece, here are 24 things I think everyone should learn by 24.
As I reflect on my 24 trips around the sun I look back at all the lessons I’ve learned and the wisdom I have gained. Some of the lessons have been learned through struggle, others through joy, and many through people I have encountered along the way. Although I am still unsure of many things and learning new things daily these are the few things I’ve learned to be true.
“You are a soul, you have a body.”
You are a soul, you have a body.
Don’t take things personally.
Perspective is everything.
Balance is key.
Control is an illusion.
Growth is a choice.
If it won’t matter in 5 years don’t give it 5 minuets.
The world is not against you but constantly being defensive and combative will make it seem that way.
What anyone has to say about me is none of my business.
Success and excuses don’t mix.
Happiness is not a destination you reach rather something you practice daily.
Forgiveness is necessary for the soul to heal.
God helps those who help themselves; same with people.
If the message you took from a challenge in life is rooted in bitterness and negativity you didn’t actually learn the lesson.
Situations in your life will repeat themselves over and over again until you learn the intended lesson.
Karma is real and what you put out you will get back ten fold. Good or bad.
Life is only as hard as you make it.
Love is not about possession. “You belong to each other but you never own each other.”
Sometimes “You gotta do what you gotta do so you can do what you wanna do.”
You can do everything the right way and still end up with nothing you want so might as well have some fun with the process.
Energy and thoughts are power, use them wisely.
Complaining is a waste of time.
If they don’t inspire you to be the best version of yourself they don’t need to be in your life.
You are right where you need to be.
